We bought a Sabrent external floppy drive and every disk says the drive is not accessible, the media is not recognized and it may not be formatted. Ive looked around online and help is vague at best or links to programs that dont seem to work. 3.5 Floppy Disk Reader Windows 8.1 And IAnyone have experience with such things Is there a way to save these or are these photos lost to technology I am running Windows 8.1 and I dont know what the original OS was for when the disks were made. If there is more information that would be helpful Ill do my best to provide it. You see, there are different types of ways to store information on a drive, and things have changed a lot since floppy drives. All modern operating systems use a file system called NTFS, which is the most secure, efficient, and sizable. Floppy drives come from the era of FAT, an obsolete architecture that nobody uses anymore because it sucks. Maybe, just maybe, you could get a USB drive, format it to FAT and install a version of linux on it or image windows 98 on it and boot from the USB. Another way that may or may not work would be to get a virtual machine and emulate windows 98 and see if it can recognize it. Also, if your disk formatting software cant scale all the way down to FAT, then FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32 could probably work. Thats what I think. Booting into Linux or a disk management utility that supports FAT is probably your best bet at cloning the data off the drive. You may even be able to do it through cmd (command prompt) from an old Windows recovery disk flash drive. Its possible the head alignment of the Sabrent drive is different from that of the drive that was used for copying the photos to the floppy disks. You can test for this by taking an unneeded disk and unconditionally formatting it to completely erase it. Then if it can be read in the Sabrent drive, theres a good chance the problem is head alignment. Unfortunately its hard to align the heads, especially for a 3.5 drive, so try another sample of the Sabrent. Vacuum them, taking care not to let the slide shutter open, then wipe off with a lint-free, slightly damp cloth, again without opening the shutter. One thing Id definitely do with those floppy disks is make sure each ones write-protect tab is activated so the data cant accidentally be erased by a drive. Maybe they had a cover but I dont know for sure, Im assuming not. I do know they were cleaned prior to putting them in the drive at some point but again idk the details. Floppy disks were never really intended as an archival medium.
